Name: Jessica McAllister

mcallister

Years in Triathlon: 2

Employment: Electrical Engineer at D2 Technologies; Vocalist for the Roman Glowlights Jazz Trio

Family Life: I’m lucky to have met my perfect match: Kevin. My parents live close by in Camarillo, and my brother and his wife live in Ventura.

My Hero: I am SO inspired by women 10+ years older than me who leave me to eat their dust during races. They rub it in at the finish line, when they are greeted by the little baby they just gave birth to! I hope I can be a super-fit mom someday too!

Athletic Background: I grew up swimming, biking, running and playing soccer for recreation. I ran Varsity Cross Country for in high school until bursitis of the hips took me out. At that point I focused my attention on Pilates and strength training, and spinning class. In college I bought a used hybrid bike to commute from Goleta to UCSB and started taking advantage of the 50 meter pool there. After several painful attempts, I was finally able to run pain-free again. I entered the 2004 Carpinteria Tri, but I over-trained and tore my hamstring the week prior. I honestly don’t know why it took me 3 years to try again, but this time I’m serious! Carp Sprint Tri 2007 was the first I actually completed, and I came in 2nd in my division! (oh ya, but that’s only out of 8.) That was just the boost I needed to join the tri club, sign up for Wildflower, buy a road bike and give this sport an honest shot!

Favorite Race and why: Wildflower 2008. It was my first olympic distance race, and I loved the whole experience of the long weekend at Lake San Antonio. I had my biggest fan there to support me, and who knew it’d be my last chance to race with Hillary?

Worse Race and why: My first try– the Solana Beach Tri, 2007. As I was coming out of the swim, I realized I had forgotten my helmet and was therefore unable to continue in the race. grrrrrr…

This years goals: Complete SB long course, then keep training through the winter and enter a 70.3 next year!

In five years I hope to: Continue to compete in local races and maybe a couple destination races. Most of all, I hope to kick my own 25 year-old-butt every successive year!

Something most people do not know about me: Aside from singing Jazz, I’ve dabbled into a few other genres by collaborating with local rock, hip-hop, and dance jam artists on recording projects. Even more out there is the Black Lotus fusion band, in which I sing either jazz (scat) or classical Indian syllables (sargam) with a sarode player, flamenco guitarist, and percussionist, sometimes over a funky electronic groove. It’s a unique trip, alright.

Track tonight

October 21, 2008

Remember track has changed to City College but will still be happening Tuesday nights. Kyle has sent me the workout so you know what to look forward to.

Workout:

4×2000, laps 1,2,4 @ 10K pace, laps 3,5 @ 5K pace

I’m feeling a little beat up from putting on quite a few miles the last two days… as I’m sure Zac is too, but we’ll be there none the less.  Hope to see you all at 6:15 at the City College Track.

So the good news is you can pick on Kyle tonight for a change. I won’t be there but will definately be thinking about you all.

My Hero: All the nurses I work with. They are on duty 24/7 so we can all be cared for if we are critically ill or injured.
We can all sleep well at night knowing they are there for us.
Athletic Background: Running since college days at Boston University. Nothing like running around the Charles River in the spring, summer, fall, and winter!

Favorite Race and why: Bay to Breakers a few years back. Was just crazy fun! And this years SB Tri since I placed first in my age group! :)
Worse Race and why: None. I’ve loved them all.
This years goals: Continues training year-round being healthy and injury free. I just love the Saturday 8:30 Biker-Chic gals I’ve started riding with. (Peace out girls!) And I am going to crew for the Kalyra Women’s Racing Team for the Race Across America next June raising money for Girls Inc of SB. They are going to break records. Stay tuned!
In five years I hope to: Continue triathlons, and continue to run.
Something most people do not know about me: I love the clean fresh mountain air of Colorado and go there often. And I love to surf! Am heading out with my board now, so see ya later!

Hawaii and Santa Barbara

October 15, 2008

1:21:39 7:14:30 4:56:27 13:50:32 1422 of 1736 7 of 30

Just wanted to congratulate Vic, another great performance from our perennial Hawaii Ironman. Above are his splits for this years race. Their were 30 guys in his 65-69 age group and Vic placed 7th. I’m sure he will have a full report when he gets back.

Also congratulations to everyone who competed in Sunday’s Duathlon, particularly Matt Trost, who was the overall men’s winner of the sprint distance race and Desa Mandarino who won the women’s sprint.

All the results can be found at http://results.active.com/pages/page.jsp?eventID=1619340&pubID=3

You’ll see two names at the very bottom of the results as DNF’s. Sarah Mandes and Liz Groom. Sarah is out of hospital, looking a little chewed up from the road rash, following her accident, but ready to start running again this week. Also a special high five to Liz for stopping immediately to help Sarah, with no thought about finishing her race. Hopefully she won’t have any similar problems at her Nike Marathon this Sunday in San Francisco.

John Herzog

Herzog2

1.5 years in triathlon – started with 2007 SB sprint tri

Work at Santa Barbara Athletic Club and Cathedral Oaks Athletic Club as the Sales & Marketing Director. Also own 2 limited liability companies.

Family life: Unmarried, live with 1 housemate, my 13 year-old cat Calvin, and the assorted termites that eat my house. My mom and dad live locally, sister lives in Florida. Grew up in Ventura and Oxnard.

My Hero: Nelson Mandela, for being imprisoned and then finding the ability to forgive his captors and ultimately free his mind and finding peace. Then becoming an icon of peace for the world. The dalai lama’s not bad either!

Athletic Background: All-star soccer player through elementary school, then switched to short-track roller speed skating. Once in high school played soccer, ran sprints and long jump in track, and played center midi in lacrosse. ( I went to a boarding school in Ojai called Thacher, hence the east coast sport of lacrosse in high school). Not good enough to play college sports, so went to beach volleyball for 12 years, and won my first two-man tourney in 1995. (I know, I’m short. But I could jump back then!) Skied since I was 3, took up snowboarding in 2000, and now I do both.

Favorite race and why: 2008 Carpinteria. I hired Liz Groom to coach me in May, and just did everything she said. I was shooting for a 2:45:00 and did a 2:31:53, and I had FUN! It was an awesome payoff to all the dedication and commitment. I did get punched in the jaw before I reached the first buoy. It still hurts.

Worst race and why: Don’t have a bad one yet. They’ve all been great, but I’ve only done 6. Give me time!

This years goals: build endurance for an Ironman 70.3 in 2009, and podium at least once in 2009. Keep having a blast and keep a balanced and relaxed approach to the sport. I can have an addictive personality and I want to go hard but have fun and not make it mean anything!

In 5 years I hope to: Be married with a child, win my age group occasionally, and have a huge unforeseen financial windfall!

Something most people don’t know about me: I used to drink and party a LOT and have been sober since 1989!

Tonights meeting

October 9, 2008

Final reminder that we have a meeting tonight at 6.30pm at Hazards/Santa Barbara Running, 110 Anacapa. We have the usual great food, drinks and fellowship plus another fun filled program. The highlight will be a talk by Olympic swimmer, Mark Warkentin. I included some information in last weeks e-mail, but wanted to include it here for the very small group of my close friends that don’t read my e-mails!!!!

Opening of open water
Open water swimmer Mark Warkentin qualified for the inaugural Olympic 10k event in Beijing by finishing seventh in the 10k at the 2008 Open Water Worlds. The 10k, which will be held in the rowing venue, was added to the Olympic program in 2005. The men’s and women’s 10k will feature 25 swimmers each, with the top men typically finishing in just less than an hour. Warkentin, who lives in Santa Barbara, Calif., has been training mainly at altitude at the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo.

Out of the pool
Warkentin, who had been a successful pool swimmer but had never qualified for the Olympics, found a second life in open water swimming after college. Warkentin had graduated from USC in 2003 and was still swimming competitively, but he admits he was “very, very close to retiring.” In 2005, he swam a one-mile ocean race. “So I raced against a bunch of masters swimmers, and I won, and for some reason it boosted my confidence,” he said.

Come listen tonight. We’ll also have the drawing for dinner for two for one lucky person who submitted their bio for our web site. In addition John Herzog will tell briefly about the Santa Barbara Athletic Club and why they have sponsored our club this year.

Chris Latham

October 8, 2008

 Chris Latham

Name: Chris Latham
Years in Triathlon: 12 years
Employment: Analyst at Citrix Online
Family Life: Mom, Dad, 2 sisters
My Hero: Anyone who conquers their fears – corny, huh?
Athletic Background: Soccer, track, waterpolo, swimming, skiing, surfing etc……I tried to keep up with the boys. My thoughts are any sport “boys” can do I can do better.
Favorite Race and why: I would have to say the Carpinteria Tri, simply because, it’s fun, low-key, local and the last race of the season for me!
Worst Race and why: July 4th SB 15K. Like Kristin, too much fun the night before.
This years goals: To not lose focus while training for Ironman Idaho.
Something most people don’t know about me: I used to bartend, so I can make a mean “Scooby Snack”!

Justin Greene

October 7, 2008

Greene

Name: Justin Greene
Years in Triathlon: Nine… as long as you include the off years where the only time I came in contact with a race was as a volunteer.
Employment: I currently work for the Santa Barbara County Auditor-Controller’s office as a CPA/analyst. In addition, a couple of days a month I work as a volunteer attorney.
Family life: Married to Melinda Greene. We currently are proud parents of a fifteen year old Chow-Chow and German Sheppard mix named Tango. We’re expecting an addition to our family will be joining us in early 2009.
My Hero: Locally it would have to be Fred Maggiore. Damn, that guy just keeps getting faster and faster!!!
Athletic Background: I competed in my first cycling criterium in 1987 at 13 years old. I raced road races, criteriums, and stage races as a “junior” until college. In addition to cycling, I swam in high school for three years. At the time there was one triathlete on the swim team who always was trying to get me to do a triathlon. I thought he was crazy and it wasn’t just because of his fashion challenged day glow running shorts. In retrospect, he must have just had foresight. After high school I took a five year hiatus from endurance sports at UCSB to enjoy college life. After UCSB I started hanging out with Melinda who was then swimming Masters at Los Banos. Going to Masters and getting to know members of the local triathlon community encouraged me to sign up for my first triathlon.
Favorite Race and Why: Definitely the Santa Barbara Triathlon. As to why, it’s only two and a half miles from my front door and there is no driving or travel involved.
Worst Race and Why: I would have to say Wildflower. Too many people and wildlife packed into too little space. Also, I prefer the amenities of home like a warm bed, hot shower, packed fridge, and roof over my head.
This Years Goals: My goals this year were just to get back into some kind of shape and race a little. Next year, I’d like to sign up for Santa Barbara long-course, my first time since 2004.
In five years I hope to: Have a healthy family, still be in Santa Barbara , and still be competing in triathlons, running races, cycling races, etc…
Something most people don’t know about me: At times I can be a neat freak and at others I can be a complete disorganized train wreck.
